135.3559 The Case: The Narmada Dam Project.
Throughout the twentieth century dam building to improve irrigation and produce hydro-electricity was considered a key component of development. It was undertaken universally from the United States to China and from the Arctic to the Equator. Despite decades of construction the debate over their environmental impact and net cost-benefit persists. The following discussion will focus on the Narmada project in India. It is one of the largest hydro developments in the world. The current official plan calls for 30 major dams and 3,135 others on India's fifth largest and only westward flowing river system. 12 pgs. 14 f/c. 19b.

136.3167 MTBE Contamination To Drinking Water.
This paper will attempt to give a context to the current controversies surrounding the potential toxicity of MTBE, particularly to drinking water. As in most debates concerning toxins and their apparent effects (or lack of effects), the two or more sides involved draw upon their socio-political agendas, as well the scientific data. This is neither clearly beneficial to the conflict, nor a deterrent from it. However, this paper will attempt to show in the concluding remarks how scientific enterprises are never absolutely objective themselves. There is ample room for scientific error and this is why when a substance as fundamental as water is involved, it may be prudent to err on the side of doubt where the data seems to be inconclusive. 10 pgs. 14 f/c. 10b.
