This paper will discuss the use of the word "tolerance", in the contexts of understanding the history of sexuality, and how it is enmeshed with constructs of deviance. This paper will argue that while some state-level changes are being made with respect to the human rights of gays and lesbians, micro-social backlash continues to flourish. The ongoing struggle for equality and recognition for and of gays and lesbians is lodged in-between the legal and the moral codes of dominant society in such a way that while legal rights are implemented, moral panic is rising in relation to the changes being instituted. 8 pgs. 14 f/c. 7b.

170.2041 Sex, Conflict and Evolution.
The evolution of a species, any species involves the complicated process of procreating, dealing with each other, and evolving in a manner that helps sustain life not diminish it. The questions that scientists ask about sex and behavior and evolution go to the heart of what makes us who we are. Nature is not perfect but it is clever. The study of sex and evolution has a great deal to tell us about how we have become what we have become. In addition, it can lead us to improve on areas--such as gender conflict--which threaten our survival. 3.5 pgs. 3 f/c. 1b.

173.3783 Queer Theory - Its Contribution To Our Understanding Of Sexuality And Sexual Identity.
This study investigates "Queer Theory's" contribution to our understanding of sexuality and sexual identity. The essay begins by exploring what exactly Queer Theory is, before elaborating on its contribution to discussions of sexuality and sexual identity. My argument is that Queer Theory, as a set of ideas based on the concept that all identities are unfixed and do not determine who we are, has played a profound and fundamental role in shaping our understanding of sexuality and sexual identity. This lies mainly in the theory's potential to question the very idea of sexual identities. Moreover, Queer Theory challenges us to think in new ways, not just about heterosexuality and homosexuality, but about seemingly fixed notions such as sexuality, gender, and even constructions such as 'man' and 'woman.' 12 pgs. 174.3793 The Right to Privacy: Sexual Orientation and Celebrities.
This piece is a 3-source, 5-page position paper on whether gay celebrities have an obligation to reveal their sexual orientation. After an outline and introductory paragraph, the author starts the piece by describing the traditional Christian view of sexuality. Then, the author describes the sexual revolution of the 1960s and how both views paradoxically exist in modern society. Using this scizophrenic view of sexuality as a backdrop, the author then discusses America's obsession with celebrities and how that obsession makes it dangerous for gay celebrities to reveal their sexuality. The author then argues that all celebrities are entitled to their privacy and while gay celebrities should be commended for asserting their sexuality, no one has the right to demand that they disclose such private matters. 5 pgs. 175.4200 Historical Roots of Gay Emancipation.
This paper uses John D'Emilio's book Sexual Politics, Sexual Communities to answer the question "What events and social changes between 1940 and 1970 made the Stonewall Riots possible?" The strength of the gay and lesbian community comes from a long history of organizations and leaders as well as subtle social, economic, and political factors that contributed to the identification of homosexuality as an identity. It is this identity around which a community has been built to disprove the notion that homosexuality is 'deviant', 'sick', or 'sinful'. The paper identifies two distinct philosophies in the gay liberation movement: one moving towards assimilation, and discounting sexual preference as an identity-builder; the other promoting pride and acceptance of homosexuality as a viable identity. 10 pgs.
