722.20300 Herceptin Vs. Cancer: What We Know and What We Need to Know
This ten-page undergraduate paper examines Genentech?s breakthrough breast cancer drug Herceptin, which was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration in 1998, and is the first in an expected wave of new therapies that will attempt to beat back cancer by attacking the disease at its genetic roots. The development of Herceptin was a joint effort of UCLA?s Jonsson Cancer Center and the biotechnology company Genentech, Inc., of South San Francisco. The book, Her-2: The Making of Herceptin, a Revolutionary Treatment for Breast Cancer, presents the story of the drug Herceptin, which produced dramatic responses in breast cancer patients such as Barbara Bradfield, as well as in other women suffering from this tragic disease.

727.20378 Evaluating Risk Factors for Social Isolation of Cancer Patients
This 4-page graduate paper presents a proposal for a study which aims to investigate the perceived factors which contribute to the social isolation of cancer patients. This proposal outlines the investigator?s background, literature background, methodology, expected results, and implications of the study. Briefly, the proposed study will make use of questionnaires in order to find out the factors contributing to the isolation of a sample group of cancer patients. Patients will be asked about the factors they feel contribute to their isolation. Patients will also be asked to rate their sense of isolation after a number of social events, including family visits, friend visits, visits from other chronically ill patients, doctor and nurse visits, informal chats, and after meetings with therapists or counsellors. Patients will also take part in informal interviews. The data analysis will attempt to find patterns in the factors which contribute to feelings of isolation among cancer patients. The findings will also include recommendations for identifying and assisting cancer patients at risk of isolation.

728.20386 HIPAA and Healthcare Informatics: An Analysis of Security Issues
This eight-page graduate paper examines HIPAA and Healthcare Informatics in terms of security issues. The author notes that through its security rules, HIPAA requires doctors, pharmacies, health plans, and other involved parties to establish policy and procedure safeguards in order to protect the confidentiality of private health information about their patients. Ultimately, covered participants must ensure all of these protections for patients cited above, and are held responsible as well for providing public notice of their privacy practices which limit the use and disclosure of information. But while HIPAA was created with the best of intentions, actual execution is proving difficult, for even though HIPAA was written to streamline operations and increase efficiency, experience is revealing that adhering to the rules is at times hard to accomplish during the implementation process.
