596.19864 Comparing Health Care Systems: United States Versus United Arab Emirates General Health Care: Comparisons and Contrasts.
My research compares and contrasts the health care system of the United States and that of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Without a doubt, the most noticeable difference between the two health systems is that the United States system works under the managed care model while the UAE system follows that used in one way or another by most of the developed nations: the universal health care system.

597.12 Hormone Replacement Therapy.
This paper discusses hormone replacement therapy and menopause. Menopause is that inevitable and irreversible time when a woman's reproductive cycle and menstruation periods gradually end, as her ovaries cease to respond to male gonadotropins and her capacity to become pregnant stops. Most of the symptoms can be eliminated, minimized or reversed by estrogen replacement therapy. Even low doses of .01 mg of ethinyl estradiol or .625 mg of Premarin daily are effective in relieving genital atrophy, vaginitis and dyspareunia, orally/systematically or locally in the form of creams.

598.13 Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
This paper is on the topic of the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the common intestinal and chronic disorder most frequently reported to and encountered by gastro-enterologists. It is also called irritable or spastic colon. The incidence of IBS has been reported to be anywhere from 9-22%, 10-22% or 20% of the American population (Masand 1998). Computing, these numbers suggest that about one out of five Americans suffers from it (Nutrition Forum 1997).

599.15 Medical/Radiology.
This paper discusses the medical/radiology screenings available to detect cancer. The trend today is to order cancer screening tests, based on age or on risks factors, but a recent report made by the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center says that these tests may not be the best for seniors or elderly persons (American Medical Association). Age, according to the report, is one of the most important factors to consider in ordering such tests. A patient with other illnesses and has only a life expectancy of five years will not benefit from a breast cancer screen test, for example, because patients do not benefit from screening for at least five years (AMA). They can suffer unnecessarily from discovering early cancer and undergoing surgery or another invasive treatments.
This paper discusses leeches as life-and-limb-savers. Blood clotting is a life-saving body process, but when it endangers life or prevents the resolution of a torn tissue, leeches can come in handy. They have shown their worth as natural blood thinners, painkillers and surgical scavengers with the anticoagulant and anesthetic properties of their saliva. These saliva components hold much promise for the "treatment of cardiological and hematological disorders." Today, the Hirudo Medicinalis species of leech is a reliable last resort when something is needed to overcome the clotting mechanism, something that thins the blood or decongest clots. Using its two suckers to feed and to hang itself, the leech secretes Hirudin, an anti-coagulant and anesthetic, while it sucks blood from the host. When it has sucked enough, it just falls off from the host and leaves blood oozing fresh from its bite wound. Although this may sound horrible sometimes it makes a difference between life and death.

601.64 Loss Of Hearing.
This paper is about hearing loss. Five steps are, thus, involved in the hearing process. which are the air conduction through the external ear to the eardrum; the bone conduction through the middle ear to the inner ear; the water conduction to the Organ of Corti; the nerve conduction into the brain; and finally, the interpretation by the brain of the message received through the sound waves. We are all familiar with the three structural parts of the ear, i.e., the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. In the process of hearing, we already know that it is in the outer ear that sound waves collect and from there are moved to the middle ear by vibrating against the eardrum or tympanum membrane. In the middle ear, these sound waves are changed into a mechanical type of vibration by the tiny bones there. And in the inner ear are special so-called "hair cells" that perceive these mechanical vibrations from the middle ear and trigger an impulse that is send to that specific part of the brain that hears.

602.70 Profile: Claire Jopling, Health Systems Manager.
This paper is a profile of Claire Jopling, Health Systems Manager. "I sell (negotiate contracts and present clinical information) pharmaceuticals to large hospital systems including Department of Defense hospitals, teaching institution hospitals (medical schools and their affiliated hospitals), the VA hospitals, and I train and assist the local field reps in selling pharmaceuticals to the community hospitals," This profile explains the tasks that Claire does as a Health System Manager. "The pharmaceutical industry has proven over several decades to be a very profitable industry to be involved in." She continued. With a little more thought, Claire and I agreed that many companies spend millions of dollars a year on research alone. With many new discoveries presently being made in biotechnology, hypertension, mental illness, cancer, cardiology and AIDS research, many new products are continuously being developed. All of which are creating new employment opportunities. This paper is descriptive and thorough in giving the details of Claire's job and her reactions during the interview.
