611. 105 Visual Agnosia.

This paper discusses visual agnosia. Agnosia is a rare perceptual disorder of the brain whereby the person is unable to recognize and identify objects or persons whose characteristics are known to him. (NINDS 2001) The person may or may not be able to recognize the geometric features of a face or object; if he does, he does not recognize the use or meaning of that object or face. This disorder can affect the sight, hearing or touch and can result from strokes, dementia or other neurological disorders (NINDS), specifically in the occipital or parietal lobes of the brain. The person's cognitive abilities in other areas remain intact.

612. 118 Abortion.

This paper focuses on abortion. The Division of Reproductive Health of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion states that there are approximately 46 million women in the world who undergo abortions each year, 20 million of which take place where abortion is either restricted or prohibited by law. Illegal abortion accounts for approximately 78,000 deaths each year worldwide, roughly 1 in seven pregnancy-related deaths. In some African countries, half of all pregnancy-related deaths are believed to be due to illegal abortion, but in countries where abortion is legal, such as in the United States, it accounts for less than 1%. The Division of Reproductive Health, however, prepares and submits annual Abortion Surveillance Reports only on legal abortions and only every three to four years previous.

613. 119 Abortion and the Right to Die.

This paper discusses two major issues of abortion and the right to die. Abortion -- Virtually everyone knows that abortion is the (intentional) termination of pregnancy before birth, but not everyone is agreed on whether it is moral or immoral, because of differing beliefs and opinions as to when the fetus starts to become a person and which is when the termination becomes murder (Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance 2003). The decision as to whether to obtain an abortion or not has been the focus of social, political, legal and moral uproar between pro-life and pro-choice force, swinging from one end to the other and forced by divergent opinions. Euthanasia - the act of intentionally causing the painless death of a sick person, usually performed by a physician, passively by not doing anything to prevent the death of the sick person, or actively by directly playing a role to cause it (CgiScripts.net).

614. 121 Culture and Health.

This paper discusses the role of culture and health in society. While accommodating the demands of the vastly different culture of American society of which they are now part, Asian and Pacific Islander parents - especially mothers - also struggle to preserve what is culturally inherent to them, in particular, in child-rearing practices (Johnson & De Hertogh). Although there are internal varieties even among these groups (including those from China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Samoa, Guam, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand), they enforce similar social controls and obedience to rules, a hierarchy of structure, discipline of children and sharing childcare with older siblings (Johnson & De Hertogh). They similarly teach and value perseverance, restraint and patience in their young and preserve close family ties. But they give greater importance to the interests and will of the group more than those of the individual.
