120. Madness in Hamlet.

The idea of madness is one which many writers have explored. By becoming mad, people are granted leave of social, moral, and political expectations. In essence, they become free because as they take leave of their senses, they are shown the societal exit door and enter a world of their own creation. Madness, however, is not a free ticket to a different reality, it comes with a very dear price. For, by leaving logic behind and becoming ruled only by emotion, rather than making things better, events will inevitably turn for the worse. It is the purpose of this paper, then to explore the theme of madness as it appears in Shakespeare's Hamlet.

121. Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing.

One of the most engaging and entertaining comedic couples in any of the works of Shakespeare, is that of Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing. Both Beatrice and Benedick are essences, they are the progenitors of the clich¨¦s of the woman-hater turned lover and the ice-queen turned golden-heart. Both of them experience a very similar sequence of events, both work with their respective tutee's in love in the same way, and both come to realize their love for each other through tricks played upon them by their own friends. In this, Benedick and Beatrice are really the true soul-mates of the story in that they truly seem to be of the same cloth and of the same heart - two halves of the same whole. Their change from enmity to love covers the course of the entire play and, in many ways, is much more engaging, funny, entertaining, and ultimately rewarding than that of Hero and Claudio. It is the purpose of this paper to explore that relationship as it changes over the course of the play, Much Ado About Nothing.

122. Othello, The Classic Tragic Hero?

Heroism, victory, and leadership are, indeed, unique but not unrelated literary concepts. They have been long defined originally within the ancient Greek and Roman works of mythology and epic. Ultimately, that which defines heroism in the literary context is a journey that takes the hero away from society, transforms him while on the journey, and a triumphant return to impart new knowledge upon the community. Victory is clearly defined as an achieved domination of one party by the other - but true victory is much harder to define and more commonly achieved by isolating a set of parameters necessary to be met before victory can be achieved - often that victory comes at a cost to all parties because it is never really clean. Othello, this paper concludes is indeed a classic tragic hero.
