185.4130 A Discussion of the Modern American Exploration of Eastern Religions and Philosophies.
This paper will argue that Americans' increasing interest in Eastern religion/philosophy - often at the expense of established religions - reflects a deeper transformation in American society during the modern era. As the educational standards and economic prosperity of Americans increased, so too did their dissatisfaction with this same materialism and the institutions (established religions / government) associated with it. When the "baby boom" generation finally assumed a dominant role in American society, their counter-cultural values - living in the moment; personal spirituality, not structured orthodoxy - became mainstream American culture, setting the stage for our renewed engagement with Eastern religion/philosophy in the twenty-first century. 9 pgs. 186.4137 Christ and the Modern World: Joan Osborne's "(What if God was) One of Us?"
The choice of a single artistic work that has significantly influenced my perception of Christ is complicated by the sheer number of stories, paintings, and songs relating to Christ and His story. This being said, I propose the popular hit from several years ago - "(What if God was) One of Us" by singer Joan Osborne - as a work that has both challenged and reaffirmed my understanding of Christ, and may likely do the same for others. I would argue that much of the power of this song derives from its context in modern Western society. Indeed, the song assumes that its listeners exist within a secular culture that has largely turned away from God. 3 pgs. Bibliography lists no sources.

187.4334 Social Justice as a Spiritual Revolution: An analysis of the relation between love, justice, and divinity.
This paper argues for divine command ethics, by first reviewing arguments for moral and ethical responses to social inequality from Pope Pius XI (1931) and Rienhold Niebuhr (1932). Taking up Niebuhr's argument, that morality must appeal to an irrational source in order to be distinct from social politics, the divinity of this relation is foregrounded as the source for moral and ethical change. This paper considers traditional conceptions of divine command and re-introduces the Ideal of love as the basis for divinity, not obedience. Morality is incompatible with social ethics, and as such, must appeal to a difference conscience. The religious imagination is described as having the potential for a revolution that could realize social change. 20 pgs. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

188.4335 Evaluating Spirituality and the Belief in Reincarnation.
This thesis analyzes reincarnation as a belief that concerns eternal life. The position of this paper is to consider what this belief produces in terms of activity and knowledge. In evaluating what the belief provides, and what is produced in different cultural contexts enables an analysis of reincarnation without validating whether reincarnation is a "true" belief or not. The analysis concludes that reincarnation emerges in universal expressions, and throughout human history, and as such a cultural continuum through humankind has evolved which affirms the belief in reincarnation. 25 pgs.
